Professor Sally Paine of the Naval War College presented an hour-long talk on “The Geopolitics of Maritime and Continental Powers: China, Russia, and the United States.” A discussion will follow. This seminar was held on Saturday, August 1st, NOON-2 p.m. (Eastern Time, US). According to Professor Paine, readings for this presentation were optional.
The organizer recommended the following readings: (1) Halford J. Mackinder, Democratic Ideals and Reality (1919), chapters 3 and 4; or (2) Clark G. Reynolds, History and the Sea: Essays on Maritime Strategies (1989), chapters 1, 2 and selections of interest; or (3) Colin Gray, The Leverage of Sea Power: The Strategic Advantage of Navies in War (1992)--theoretical chapters.
